On the first day of school in 2005, Martha Cothren, a teacher in Little Rock, removed all of the desks in her classroom. She told the students, You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk. Nobody had the right answer, but the word was out and TV News crews were there to see what this crazy teacher was up to. At the end of the day 27 U.S. Veterans, all in uniform, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They went halfway around the world, so you could have the freedom you have. She was named the VFW Teacher of the Year the following year.
