George R.R. Martin said "Every man should lose a battle in his youth, so he does not lose a war when he is old." This is excellent advice! I grew up in Huron, South Dakota, so I've always had a connection to Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today. He grew up in the same town that I grew up in. He was there many years before I was, but we lived in the same area... so when he was launching the first nationwide newspaper in the 1980's, I was a kid that was impressed to see someone from my hometown doing this. He said in one of his books that his failure in his twenties with “SO DAK SPORTS” made him confident enough to succeed in doing this later in life. He knew what failure felt like and he knew how to side-step to avoid it. It seems like his lesson paid off. That paper was a success, partially because he knew how to avoid failure!
